Countless millions were lost to the Infinite Black during Mother’s 5-year assault on mankind, and in the fifteen years since the attacks have ceased, the suicide rate has increased to epidemic proportions.
People were left decimated, part of, or entire families, were snatched; others were executed when they fought back against the machines. The survivors who remain try to cope such great loss, and the pain of not knowing what has become of the loved ones who vanished in the night.
Suicide has become so commonplace now that those who choose to end their lives, need only to paint a white letter M on their front door, there is no stigma, and no other explanation is necessary. The letter on the door informs the Personal Collection Services, known everywhere as the Death Collectors, that the resident is sadly resting within. Death Collectors consist of community volunteers, these small teams recover and deliver the dead to grove crematoriums, a service that provides some final dignity to those whose hearts were broken beyond repair. Although unspoken, it is believed that the white letter M signifies, that even though there is now peace, they are still a victim of Mother.
The death dealers are recognisable by their distinct uniforms; black hooded ventilation masks, to combat potential smell of the deceased, safety boots, and black overalls with the white letter M printed on their back. Each grove has one or two black hover vehicles that are clearly marked with a grey chequered decals. Death collecting is a sad but important duty, and the role is rotated through the community so that everyone in the small communities can help in some way.
