Happiness is but a breath,
A moment,
A fleeting thought.
It is not a matter of the heart;
That is a misconception
Born of fairytales.
Happiness is like
Cupped hands catching ocean waves.
It cannot be contained.
What little you hold
Soon slips away.
It leaves your hands wet,
And longing
To return to the water.
Happiness is wild,
Like an elusive creature
Moving through the forest.
It cannot be caged.
Sit quietly and observe.
Perhaps it will come to you.
Perhaps, for a moment,
You may stroke its fur
Before it returns to the wilderness.
So when happiness finds you,
Do not try to keep it.
Simply appreciate it
While it lingers,
For it was never yours to own,
Only yours to experience.
